Lighthouse and storm waves on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A lighthouse stands on a rocky base with a lit lantern and beam sweeping across dark storm clouds, with large curling waves breaking in the foreground. The piece uses bold outlines with soft grey shading and high contrast in the clouds and foam. It is shown in black ink and greys on a forearm, with a red top visible in the background.

The reunion is held in the function room of the Ship Inn, the same room where you once sat your mock exams, and Maureen Tait is already pointing at the window before you've got your coat off. 'The light's on,' she says. 'They switched it back on for the gala. Nobody told you?' You had not been told. From the car park, the lighthouse on Scarrow Head sits black against a sky the colour of wet slate, its lantern throwing a single white beam over the harbour wall and out across the chop beyond.

You remember the night of the big storm in the sixth form, when Dean Harker dared the four of you to walk the breakwater at the turn of the tide. Waves came over the rocks in grey ridges and burst white against the stone, and the keeper's lamp swept across you every twelve seconds like someone counting. Dean made it as far as the lighthouse steps. You turned back at the third buoy, shaking, and he never once mentioned it afterwards, which was its own kind of kindness.
Now he is at the bar, grey at the temples, buying a round nobody asked for. He crosses the room with two glasses and says, 'Still scared of the sea?' You tell him the sea is fine, it's the people who keep going back to it that worry you. He laughs, then stops, looking past your shoulder at the window, where the beam passes over the glass and lights your reflection for a moment before moving on.
Neither of you says anything. The beam comes round again, and this time you count the seconds with him.
