Lighthouse and ship's wheel on thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A lighthouse rises at the centre of the design, surrounded by radiating sunburst lines and stylised clouds within an arched frame. Below it, waves and a ship's wheel sit on a banner whose partly visible lettering reads as a quote. The work uses bold outlines with grey shading and no colour, and fills the thigh from knee towards hip.

Brother Anselm had kept the lamp on Saint Ebba's for thirty-one winters, and he had never once let it gutter. The monastery sat on its rock like a grey hen on a nest, its bell rung for the tide as much as for the hours, and the lighthouse stood at the seaward end of the wall with its iron gallery bolted to the stone.

The boy arrived in October with a sack and a letter from his mother's cousin. Anselm did not ask what the letter said. He gave the boy the wheel room to sweep, showed him how the clockwork turned the great lens, and taught him to count the seconds between flashes so that he would know, in the dark, that the machine was still working.
On the feast of the drowned fishermen the fog came in thick as wool. A boat's lantern bobbed somewhere beyond the reef, and the bell was useless against the noise of the surf. Anselm climbed the stairs with his knees cracking, and the boy followed without being told. They wound the weights together. The beam swept out over the water, and a moment later a faint answering shout came back from the reef.
Anselm wrote nothing in the log that night except the hour and the words "light kept." In the morning the boy asked him why the old brothers painted a banner on the chapel wall with the sea and a ship's wheel beneath it. Anselm shrugged. "So whoever comes up the stairs knows what the work is for," he said, and went down to breakfast.
