A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp at Scarrow Head had not been lit by a man's hand since the Tuesday the Margaret went missing, and Nell Dacre had decided that was the first thing the Board inspector would hear about. She climbed the one hundred and twelve iron steps with a tin of paraffin in one fist and a pot of sea thrift under her arm, because her mother had always said a lamp wanted company.

Her brother Tom had painted the rope heart on the gallery door the summer before he went to sea, a joke aimed at the lovesick crews who rowed out just to look at her. The paint had cracked now, and the sea showed through in blue smears. The inspector came ashore by dinghy at noon, a thin man with a ledger and wet shoes, and he looked at the flower pot before he looked at the light.

'The lamp is not the Board's concern, Miss Dacre,' he said. 'Your father's licence lapsed in March.'

She did not argue. She struck a match, turned the wick up, and let the wind off the Head push the flame into the glass until the beam swung out across the water, white and steady, over the place where the Margaret had gone down. Two gulls lifted from the rocks and wheeled into the glare. The inspector wrote nothing for a long time. Then he took off his hat, sat on the bottom step, and asked whether there was any tea. In the morning the boats came home by her light, one after another, as though the sea had only been waiting for someone to ask it properly.
