Lighthouse and flower on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of a red and white striped lighthouse with a yellow light beam, framed by a rope circle and topped with a pink flower and teal leaves. Clouds, blue waves and a banner with partly legible coordinate-style text sit below, with bold black outlines. Bright red, yellow, pink and teal ink dominate against the skin, and a white lace garment shows at the top edge of the frame.

The oil had run low by the third watch, and Thessa climbed the stair with the last jar balanced against her hip. Below her the harbour lay black, the masts of the grain ships swaying like reeds. Her father had painted the tower's banded stones with red ochre so sailors could tell it from the white cliffs of the island, and every night since he had gone to the mainland with fever she had kept the bands bright.

Out past the breakwater a single lantern moved, low and uncertain. It was a boat with no sail, rowed by someone who did not know the channel. Thessa set the jar down, fed the fire with the dried thorn her mother had gathered, and swept the great bronze mirror until its light threw a yellow road across the water. She did not think of the priests' stories about the sea gods. She thought of the rope that ran from the mirror frame to the harbour post, which her brother had knotted the spring before he left.
The lantern turned toward the beam. Oar by oar it came in past the rocks where the waves broke white and the water went green over the sunken blocks. A boy climbed onto the quay, shaking, and held up a folded cloth. On it were the depth marks of the safe channel, copied in a hand she knew. Her brother had sent them back with the fishermen, so the tower could show the way to anyone who asked.
At dawn she scraped fresh ochre onto the stones and copied the marks in red beneath the highest window. The flower on the sill had opened in the night, pink against the grey stone, and she left it where it was.
