Lighthouse and sailing ship on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A lighthouse with a red and white banded tower and a sailing ship on rolling dark water sit inside an oval frame edged with a rope. Below and to the side are a coiled rope, dark feathers, green leaves and a large yellow flower with an orange centre, all in bold black outlines with solid fills. The palette mixes reds, oranges, yellows and greens with black and grey shading, and the design wraps around the upper arm and shoulder.

The lamp at Scarrow Head had been dark nine nights when the schooner Lark Wren came round the point under a sky the colour of wet slate. Ada Pell watched her from the gallery with her father's brass telescope, its tube gone green at the joints, and she counted the sails the way he had taught her: topsails first, then the jib, then the ones that didn't belong.

The paraffin had run out in the second week of the gale. Ada had spent her own savings on a barrel from the chandler in the harbour town and walked it up the cliff path on a handcart, a coil of tarred rope looped over her shoulder because the cart's axle had snapped halfway. Her father always said a light that isn't lit is a lie told to the sea, and she had never once wanted to be a liar.
By the time the Lark Wren's boat grounded on the shingle, Ada had the wick trimmed and the great lens turning, sending its red and white bands out across the water like the stripes of a barber's pole. The men who climbed the rocks were soaked and swearing, and the mate asked who had lit it. Ada pointed at the tower. The captain, a thin man with a grey beard, stepped forward and looked at her for a long time before he spoke.
'Ada,' he said. 'You've grown.' It was her brother Samuel, eleven years gone to sea, come home the only way a sailor can, by a light someone else kept burning. She wrote it in the log that night in her neatest hand: Light burning. Ship in sight. Brother aboard, or near enough.
