Ship in a heart with lighthouse and flower

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A three-masted sailing ship with white sails and a red pennant sits inside a heart outline, with a red and white striped lighthouse on the left and dark clouds on the right. Below the heart, dark rocks rise from the base and an orange flower with green leaves completes the design. Bold black outlines, solid fills and a red sky behind the ship give it a classic traditional look against plain skin.

The lamp on Gull Holm had been dark for two nights when Ada Penrose rowed out to the rocks with a lantern she did not intend to light. Her father had kept the light for thirty-one years and never once let it fail, not in the February gale that took the Marigold, not the summer fog sat on the strait for a week. Now he lay upstairs with his boots beside the bed, and the wick was hers to trim.

Three masts came round the point at dusk, sails furled tight, a red pennant snapping at the top of the mainmast like a warning nobody aboard had asked for. Ada watched it from the gallery rail. The ship dropped anchor in the lee of the holm where the rocks rise black and ragged, and a boat put off with a single lantern hung at its bow.

The man who climbed the stone steps wore a captain's coat gone green at the seams. He asked for her father by name, and when she told him, he sat down heavily on the step and took off his hat. 'Then it's you I owe,' he said, and unwrapped a bundle of oilcloth. Inside lay a brass lamp chimney cracked clean across, and folded beneath it a note in her father's hand from the winter the Marigold went down.

Ada turned the note over. On the back, in pencil, her father had listed what the light still needed before the storms: a new wick, two gallons of paraffin, a cloth for the glass. She climbed the tower, struck a match and lit the lamp for the first time since the funeral. Below her, the red pennant dipped once in the dark before the ship rode out on the tide.
