Lighthouse heart and flower design sketch
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn line sketch on white paper shows a heart outlined with a rope border, containing a lighthouse, wave lines and two birds. Below it sits a five-petalled flower with leaves and a small anchor. The linework is black and even, with dotted shading around the flower, and the composition is centred with a ruler and pens visible at the edges.

Ward 4, 03:10. Mrs Pryce in bed six has stopped asking the time, which Sister says is a good sign and I think is only that she has given up on clocks. From the chair by the sluice I can see the Penmarrow light through the end window, turning over the harbour wall. White, then dark, then white again, every eleven seconds. I have been counting the gaps all night because Dad taught me that was the trick. Never count the dark. Count the gap before the next flash.

Bed four's drip needed changing at two. The young doctor asked me, very politely, whether I had ever sat with a patient who was frightened, and I said yes, of course, though I didn't tell him that most of my sitting happens in this chair with my eyes on the water. Dad kept a logbook for the light. In the back of it he had pencilled a heart with a rope round the edge, a lighthouse standing in the middle, two gulls over the waves, and a flower underneath with a small anchor beside it. I never asked what the flower was for. I think he just liked drawing on a long shift.
At twenty to six the window goes grey and the lamp dims as the sun comes up over the bay. Mrs Pryce wakes and asks, quite clearly, whether the lighthouse is still on. I tell her it is, and that it'll be on again tomorrow, which is true enough. She says good, Ruth, and goes back to sleep. That's the whole of it. Eleven seconds, then the morning.
