Bass guitar tattoo on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed bass guitar is tattooed across the back of a hand, showing the body, neck, tuning pegs, pickups, bridge and control knobs. The shading is smooth and highly dimensional, with strong highlights and deep shadows that give the instrument a three-dimensional, almost metallic appearance. Individual letters are inked on the fingers below the guitar, and the dark background keeps the focus on the skin and the design.

The fourth string went at soundcheck, which Tomasz decided was the bass's way of saying it had been waiting for someone to notice. Nobody had a spare set. The Lantern Club in Leeds smelled of wet coats and bleach, and the engineer was already rolling a cigarette he wasn't allowed to light indoors. Tomasz had a bass in the van, though, a black thing with twin pickups and knobs worn bright by somebody else's thumbs. It belonged to Ruth, who had left it with him on Thursday and then got on the early bus to Hull, saying she would be back for it when the funeral was done.

He took it out of the case and tuned it by ear to the drummer's kick, working the pegs slowly while the room filled with the clatter of people who had not yet decided to listen. Taped inside the lid was a scrap of setlist in Ruth's square capitals. Under the third song she had written: TURN THE BRIDGE KNOB BEFORE THE CHORUS. TRUST IT. He had laughed at that on Thursday. Now, with three strings and the fourth one dead, he found the knob and eased it round, and the low end swelled under the guitarist's chords like a door opening onto a warmer room.

The crowd leaned in. Nobody in the Lantern could have said why, only that the floor seemed to tilt towards the stage. Tomasz played the last chorus with his eyes closed and his hand flat on the body, feeling the wood hum through his palm.

Afterwards he wiped the strings down, set the bass back in its case and pressed the latches shut. The case clicked twice, and somewhere inside it the last note was still ringing.
