Lily and vine tattoo on wrist and hand
Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A lily with three leaves sits over the wrist, with its stamens and petals outlined in dark grey line. Soft grey shading gives the petals depth, and thin scrolling vines with small dot accents trail up the forearm and down across the back of the hand. The image is black and grey, with the flower centred on the wrist and the vines leading toward the knuckles.

Nobody in Porthgwidden grew lilies on purpose. The wind off the bay took anything with petals, so when Mags Tregarthen's white lily came up through the crack beside the net store, we all stood round it as if it might bolt. I was nineteen and mending twine for my uncle's boat, the Constance, and I thought it looked daft, all that showing off in a place built for gulls.

The fleet came in on the Friday one boat short. The Constance limped home with my uncle Ivor at the wheel and nobody else aboard, and he never said what had become of Dai Penhale, only that the sea had been in a mood. Mags said the lily had been watching the harbour mouth all week, and I told her to stop being soft. But she trained the vine up the store wall with strips of old lobster rope, one loop at a time, and the scrolls curled out past the gutter as though they were looking for something to hold.
By the next spring the vine had reached the eaves and the lily had opened three times, its white going grey at the edges where the salt caught it. The Constance went out again with a new skipper. I stood at the slipway and watched her shrink to a fleck, then I climbed the wall with a pair of scissors and a coil of rope and cut a fresh loop for the lily to follow, because somebody has to keep training the living things on a wall that faces the sea.
