Floral and peacock feather shoulder tattoo

Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

Seen from behind, a woman with a dark bob wears a striped top with black straps while a tattoo covers her shoulder blade and upper arm. The design includes grey lily and daisy-style flowers, a blue rose, leaves, fine dotted vines and a blue and grey peacock feather with its eye at the lower end. The shading is smooth and soft, with blue colour concentrated in the rose and feather and grey tones in the flowers.

The snow had sealed the Hollin Inn for three days when Edith found the feather tucked behind the kitchen clock, its eye looking up at us as though it had been waiting all along. Nobody claimed it. The six stranded guests shrugged over their broth, and the rail engineer swore it had not been there when he came in off the moor road with his boots full of ice.

My sister-in-law Ruth painted the dresser in the snug the summer she came to stay, grey lilies climbing its doors and a single daisy in the corner like a coin someone had dropped. Over the front door she put a blue rose, and I told her that was foolish, since roses don't come in that colour. She laughed and said that was exactly why she had chosen it. She also had a habit of hiding small things where I would find them years later, and I had stopped expecting anything of her after the funeral.

On the fourth night the wind dropped and I sat up with the feather, turning it under the lamp while the guests slept. Its barbs were fine as thread and the blue ran through them like a vein. Between the ticking of the clock and the hush of the drifts, I finally thought to lift the clock's back panel, and there was a folded page in Ruth's looping hand: Give the eye to whoever comes up the lane asking for the road.

At first light a yellow plough light swung across the frosted glass, and a young woman in a borrowed coat stood on the step, stamping her feet and asking the way to Keld. I pinned the feather above the blue rose, tied it with red wool, and pointed her down the lane.
