Colour tattoo of a wildflower bouquet with daisies and purple buds, in a painterly splatter style, across the side of the ribs.

Wildflower bouquet on the side ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a dense bouquet of white daisies, yellow flowers, purple buds and small bell-shaped blooms, with a few sprigs of grass. Black ink strokes, splatters and drips run through the design, and loose teal and green washes sit around the flowers. The bouquet is arranged vertically down the side of the torso, with the blooms fading into soft splashes towards the edges.

The order had gone to the wrong village, so at half past six on Saturday you were standing in a ditch off the Woodbridge road with a bread bag and a pair of blunt scissors, cutting daisies in the wet. Mrs Haddow's oxeye and white roses had been loaded into a van bound for Ipswich, and the bride's mother had rung three times before you finished your first coffee.

You took what the hedgerow offered: a clump of lavender gone leggy at the gate, bells from the lily of the valley under the churchyard wall, and handfuls of grass, because grass always makes a bunch look like it grew there. Back in the shop you tipped the dregs of a sign-writer's teal paint onto the bench and dipped the stems without quite deciding to. Blue-green bloomed up the white paper wrap like weather coming in. Black drips ran down through the lilac, and the yellow heads looked as if they had been thrown.

The bride, when she came in at ten, held it at arm's length for a long time and then laughed. 'It looks like the field fell on the table,' she said. 'That's the point,' you said, and she took it anyway, and carried it up the aisle at St Mary's with the splashes trailing from her wrist like spilled light.

Her father found you afterwards by the lychgate and tried to pay for the flowers. You told him the ditch was public and there was nothing to pay for. He pressed a folded note into your palm regardless. Only later, in the van, did you open it and find a single daisy inside, pressed flat and stained the same teal, as if someone had painted it on purpose.
