A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the village of Hollin Gap, the lamps went out in the second winter after the mill closed, and nobody could say who had let them. Mags Tredwell, who kept the chandlery, blamed the wind getting into the wicks. Her son said otherwise. He had seen a woman with a red flower in her hair walking the cliff path with a box of paints under one arm.

The woman was called Ines Parrish, though nobody remembered her arriving. She drew on whatever stood still: gateposts, the chapel wall, the flat stones above the slipway. She drew faces with their hair swept back in soft waves, open palms, eyes without lids, and she filled them with colour that never kept to the black lines. Where the red ran over the edge a gull took off. Where the blue spilled, the tide came in an hour early.

The lamp-keeper, a stiff old man named Cole, climbed the tower one night to see what she was doing. He found her on the gallery with a brush in one hand and a bolt of lightning sketched in the air above the lens. She was not cross. She asked him to hold the pot steady, and he did, because his hands had wanted something to do for years.

The light burns with a flicker now, a jolt of blue at the turn of every sweep, and the fishermen trust it more than the old steady beam. Cole never climbed the tower again. On clear nights the children of Hollin Gap trace the outlines on their own arms with a wet finger and wait for the colour to spill.
