Matryoshka doll with poppies on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A matryoshka doll with a yellow dotted headscarf and painted face fills the forearm, its white body decorated with a folk pattern. Three large red poppies with purple flowers and green leaves sit across the doll's midsection, with a blue base at the bottom. Bold dark outlines and flat colour fills give the piece a clean, saturated look against the skin.

Marta sat cross-legged in the grass at the end of the plum rows, a jar of linseed thinning on the stump beside her, and worked the last poppy onto the largest doll. Wasps drowsed in the windfalls. Somewhere behind the packing shed her uncle was arguing with the cider press about a bearing that would not turn, and every few minutes the clang came across the orchard like a dropped spoon.

The set had been her grandmother's idea. Seven dolls, each one opening to reveal the next, the way the family had opened into smaller and smaller houses until nobody remembered which one came first. Marta had painted the faces of six of them in June. She had dotted the yellow headscarves by lamplight in the cold kitchen, because it was the only room with a window facing east. The seventh, the plainest, was still bare wood, and it was the one her grandmother had asked for by name.
She painted the poppies fat and red, three across the belly of the big doll, each with a dark heart she dabbed in with the tip of a bristle. Purple cornflowers went in the gaps. The green leaves she did quickly, the way her grandmother had taught her, flicking the brush so the edges looked wind-torn.
When the uncle finally came round the end of the row, wiping his hands on a rag, he looked at the doll for a long time and then at the bare wooden seventh. "Nobody will ever open that far," he said. Marta capped the jar. "I know," she said, and set the smallest doll inside the one with the poppies, where it fit exactly, snug as a seed in its case.
