Dove and woman's face in line art on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A continuous black outline shows a woman's face in profile with a dove resting at her shoulder and a small leaf or sprig near her hair. The linework is thin and unshaded, with the red lips as the only colour. The design fills the centre of the frame, with soft white fabric in the background.

Marta had the ovens lit before the milk van had turned off Chapel Street. Flour hung in the lamplight like something not yet settled. She worked the dough the way her grandfather had taught her, never lifting her hands from the board longer than she had to, and thought about the drawing pinned above the proving racks.

Her cousin Ines had sketched it on the back of a delivery docket: one unbroken pencil line that began at a bird's wing, climbed over a woman's cheek, and came back round to the bird's breast without ever leaving the paper. Ines swore it could not be done with a pen that stopped. Marta had tried all week with a bread knife, scoring loaves in one continuous cut, and produced nothing but ruined crusts and a flour-covered apron.
At half past four the sky over the car park turned the colour of weak tea. Marta took out the last tray, the tops split and crackling. She set one loaf aside and scored it in a single curve that ran from the crown down and round, lifting the blade only once to press a sprig of rosemary into the top. The bird came out lopsided. The face had no eyes, just a line for the brow.
When Ines came in at six, still in her coat, she turned the loaf over in her hands and laughed. "You stopped," she said. "Only once." "Only once," Marta agreed, and cut the first slice for her.
