Art Nouveau woman portrait on a lower leg

Calf · Mixed · Photo

A woman's head and shoulders are drawn in outline with soft grey shading, framed by large swirling curls and a long braid that wraps down the design. Thin, even linework and decorative knot-like patterns fill the hair and side of the head. Small areas of red shading sit on the shoulder and cheek against the grey, and the design is set on a smooth, lightly lit section of leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hatbox rattled against Nell's hip as she crossed the wet cobbles of Sallow Lane, the last tram long gone and the gasworks breathing orange over the roofs. Inside, wound in tissue, lay the wig she had spent three weeks building for the Halbeck Theatre: a cloud of swirling curls pinned to a wire frame, with one long braid she had plaited so tight it hummed when she touched it.

Madame Orla had insisted on the braid. "Every heroine in the new posters has one," she had said, tapping a sketch of a woman with her face turned half away, the hair rising around her like steam off a kettle. Nell had copied the lines by lamplight, the same thin even outlines, the knots worked in where a real plait would have frayed, and then she had dabbed rouge onto the cheeks because the sketch asked for it.

The stage door was propped with a brick. Inside, the dresser, a boy called Tobin with ink on his cuffs, was asleep on a costume hamper. Nell set the box on the dressing table and lifted the lid, and the curls caught the gaslight as if they meant to rise. She drew back the tissue and found the braid had slipped its pins, uncoiling down the wire like a stream finding its old bed.

She sat with a hairpin between her teeth until the sky greyed over the gasworks, rewinding the braid one strand at a time. When Tobin woke, the wig was perfect, and the only thing she had changed was the rouge, which she wiped away with her thumb, leaving the cheeks pale. The curtain went up at eight. From the wings Nell watched the leading lady take her bow, and the face under all that carefully knotted hair looked straight past the footlights at the one person in the house who had been awake all night to make it.
