Line drawing of a peacock with heart-eyed feathers
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single peacock stands in profile with its head raised and a crest of small plumes, and its long tail sweeps down and curls at the bottom of the frame. The design uses clean, even black outlines with no shading, and the tail feathers each contain a heart-shaped eye, with scroll motifs on the wing and neck. The image is a plain white background with the drawing centred and fully contained within the frame.

Nobody in Harrowgate Keep had ever agreed on how many peacocks lived in the ruin, but my gran insisted there were seven, and she was the one who fed them. By the time I came back to nurse her through the winter, there were only two, and the older one, Mrs Thorne as the village called her, had taken to roosting on the broken chapel wall like a bishop refusing to be moved.

She had a tail the colour of wet slate, and every feather bore a heart in its eye. Gran said the hearts were counted by the castle's last lady, who had sewn them into the tapestries before the roof fell in, and that a peacock kept its hearts by keeping its tail up. I thought that was nonsense until the February morning I found the tail folded down in the nettles.
Mrs Thorne was not dead, only sulking, and when I coaxed her with a crust she lifted one foot and showed me a bare shaft where a feather had been pulled clean. Gran's hands had gone that way too, for her knitting, the last month. I sat down on the cold stone and counted the eyes I could see, eleven of them, and then I counted them again, because the number mattered more than I could say.
I left the crust, went back up to the house and fetched her embroidery frame. Gran watched me thread the needle and said nothing, only smiled. By dusk I had stitched a heart into a square of linen, pinned it to the chapel wall, and when Mrs Thorne came hopping along the coping to see it, she shook her whole tail open over the stones like a fan. Twelve, I thought. Near enough.
