Her mother had planted them from cuttings carried through the long sleep in a seed vault, wrapped in wet cloth. The stems came up dark blue, the colour of ink left too long in the pot, and the leaves were cut like lace, each vein drawn with a fine nib. Nobody on the terrace could say why they bloomed blue, only that they did, and that the bees from the lower dome would not touch them.
In the third summer the first rose opened, then the second, pressed together like two women leaning close to share a secret. Beside them a bud stayed shut, tight as a fist. The girl knelt to look, and the bud split a fingernail's width, showing a pale line of light inside. The wind off the cold sea turned the leaves over, and the hatched shadows on them rolled like rain.
The old woman in the lower dome said a rose only opens for someone who has stopped expecting it. So the girl stopped climbing. She sat at the bottom of the steps with her back to the terrace and let the lamp oil go cold. When at last she went up in the thin light, there were seven flowers, all open, and the closed bud had become a small blue star at the heart of the bed.
