Blue delft-style floral flash design
Botanical · Colour · Flash
A vertical arrangement of two large blue flowers with layered petals sits at the centre, with smaller blossoms, leaves and dotted accents above and below. The linework is outlined in a deeper blue, with soft wash shading inside the petals and leaves. The design is shown in a single blue tone on a plain white background, with the motifs spaced evenly down the tall composition.

Jan had been told twice by Meester Van der Berg that a flower painted with a second thought would show it in the glaze. So at the long bench by the Oude Delft window he kept his brush moving, dipping cobalt from the little jar, flicking out the petals of the first bloom in five strokes and never a sixth. The light off the canal came through the diamond panes and lay across the tiles drying in their rows like unbaked bread.

Each morning the master walked the line with his hands clasped behind his back, stopping only where a dot had gone wrong. Jan's dots were always right. His leaves were not. He could draw a leaf that curled like a wave, but in the kiln it bled into the white and looked like a smudge of smoke, and the master would tap the edge of the tile with one finger and say nothing, which was worse.
In February the kiln cracked a batch of forty. Jan's stack came out whole. Among them was a tall panel of two great flowers, one set above the other, with blossoms and dotted sprays running up its sides, the outlines dark as ink and the petals washed pale at the centre. He had painted it at night, alone, when the bench was cold, and had not thought of it as anything at all.
The master lifted it to the window and turned it slowly. For a long while he said nothing. Then he set it on the shelf above the door, where the customers would see it first, and wrote a price on a card in a hand Jan had never seen him use for anything but orders. "Sell the others," he said. "Keep this one where I can look at it." Jan did not ask what the card said. He saw the number was more than his wages for a year, and he went back to the bench and painted a leaf, slowly, the way he had never dared.
