A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every autumn the sea wanted one boat, and every autumn Maud Tanner walked down to the slipway with her hair pinned up and her hand at her chin, deciding who it would be. The men of Pellow said she had a clever face for bargaining, and they were right, though they never asked what she bargained with.

That year it was Tom Brewer's cutter. The wind had turned on the Thursday and the lamp at the point stayed dark. Maud went out past the breakwater at low water, a red rose in one hand, and stood on the wet stones where the old women said the sea could hear you best.

She did not pray. She talked to it the way she talked to the fishmonger, quick and unimpressed. Take the rose, she said, it came off my own wall and it will die by tonight anyway, same as the lot of you. Bring the boats in and I will sit on this wall every tide until my hands give out. The water rose over the stones and the rose went under with it, and she came home soaked to the waist.

The cutter came in at dawn with its sail torn and Tom asleep at the tiller. Maud still walks down every low tide with a flower in her hand, and the men still say she is the only woman in Pellow who has ever made the sea blink. When her hand goes to her chin, thinking, the boats keep to the harbour and nobody argues with the weather.
