Line maze tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm is covered in a labyrinth of fine, repeated black lines that form nested square turns and a maze-like pattern. The design ends at the wrist in a solid black band with a jagged edge, and the hand is partly visible and out of focus below. The image is black and grey with a warm, faded filter, shot at an angle against a tiled floor.

Nobody at the reunion remembers Mr Okafor's Thursday detention except me, and only because Gavin Pryce was stuck in it beside me. We sat in Room 14 with a ruler and a biro, drawing on squared paper that was supposed to be a map of the Severn estuary. By half past four his sheet had become a labyrinth so tight that Okafor, peering over the desk, asked him to lift his hand out of the window light so he could see where it ended.

Thirty years on, the function room smells of warm sausage rolls and floor polish. Gavin is standing by the urn, and I can see the design he has carried all this time: nested square turns running down to a solid black band whose edge is torn like a page pulled from a notebook. He catches me staring and grins. 'Still no way out,' he says. 'I just kept adding walls.'
Okafor told us once that a maze with no exit was only a drawing, and a real one needed a pencil line somewhere, faint enough to miss. I said this to Gavin over the crisps. He shrugged and said his mum had kept that exercise book, and he had never once gone looking for the line. Then he tapped the black band and said that was the point where he had stopped trying to get out and started drawing the walls he wanted.
Later, in the car park, I found the exercise book in my bag. I had borrowed it years ago and never given it back. Under the last turn of the maze, in pencil so light it had almost rubbed away, a single line ran off the edge of the page.
