Black and grey dotwork tattoo of a mountain range and a moon in a band around a forearm.

Mountain range band on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid band wraps around the inner forearm, showing a row of jagged mountain peaks under a pale moon. The sky behind the peaks is built from fine stippled dots that fade toward the edges of the band. The work is entirely in black and grey, with the dotted shading giving the peaks and sky their texture against the untattooed skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ward goes soft around three, when the pumps stop their chirping and the radiators tick like someone counting under their breath. I do the half-hourly rounds with the torch held low, and I always stop at bed six, because Ivo Kellerman is awake and looking at the window as if it owes him something.

"Peaks," he says, when I ask what he wants. He holds up a faded Polaroid with a thumb over one corner. It shows a forearm, a band of grey mountains, sky built from thousands of dots that thin toward the edges, and a moon no bigger than a pinhead. "My brother Anton had that done in a back room above a launderette in Keighley, 1961. Bench lamp, needles he sharpened between clients. He wanted the moon left out. Anton put it in anyway."

"Did he ever go up them?" I ask, mostly to keep him talking while I check his line and his saline.

"Once. Scafell, in sleet. He said the sky looked like frost on glass from up there, and you had to look sideways to see the dots." Ivo lowers the photograph onto his chest. "Daylight makes everything look like a dentist's chart. It's only at night you can read them."

When I look up again he's asleep, the photograph slipping toward the blanket, the moon in it sitting on the last peak exactly where Anton meant it to be. I leave the torch on the bedside table, angled so the light falls across the picture, and finish my round in the dark.
