Linked hearts with swirling black stems
Mixed · Flash
A stylised design of three hearts formed from tapering black calligraphic strokes, with stems that curl and trail downwards. Soft pink and red blurred shading sits behind the upper and middle hearts, while the linework stays solid black. The design is centred on a plain white background with generous space around it.

The ink on the Hollin Relay is older than the hull, so you thin it with condensate every morning until the brush runs like a held breath. Dara has taught you that a stroke should taper before it stops, the way a swift leaves the wire. Today the sheet wants three hearts on a single stem, and the client, a cargo pilot called Oyelaran, wants them to look as if they are leaning toward each other across a corridor with no windows.

You work from the bottom up because that is how the brush wants to move. The first heart bends and catches itself. The second pulls away from the first like thread off a spool. Dara's old rule is to leave the third heart open at the top, so whoever reads it has to finish it. You ask why. She says a closed shape is a verdict, and the ship has had enough of those.
The blush goes on last, dusted in with a dry pad, rose at the edges and a little coral in the middle, blurred the way the bulkhead lamps blur at shift change. Oyelaran watches the colour sink into the lines and says nothing for a long time. Then she asks whether the pink will hold when the reactor runs cold, and you tell her the truth, which is that nothing you make out here is meant to outlast the hull, only the afternoon.
She pays in grain credits and takes the sheet rolled under her arm like a chart. Two decks down, you wipe the brush clean and find a single black hair caught in the last curl of the stem. You leave it there. Somebody will need a mark that was not planned.
