Heart and swirling vine tattoo design

Black and grey · Flash

A black ink line drawing of a vertical ornamental design. A large heart with spiral curls sits at the centre, with a vine of scrolls and tendrils rising above it and continuing down below. The linework is drawn with dark, even strokes of uniform weight, with the heart filled in solid black and the scrolls left as outlines on plain white.

Tertius, the vine on the north wall has done what you said it would, and worse. It climbed the trellis you built and then kept going, over the lintel and down the far side, where the scrolls curl back on themselves like the fern heads you used to pick for Mother. I have stopped trying to cut it to shape. Mistress Verania laughs when I apologise and tells me the grapes will be sweeter for the trouble.

The knot is the strange part. Where the two old stocks were bound together the spring before you left, the wood swelled into a shape I can only call a heart, two lobes turned inward and rolled tight at the centre. I did not do it on purpose. The bark simply healed that way, and the new tendrils keep coming out of the bottom point as though it were a root. The boy from the next villa says it is a sign from the gods. I told him the gods have better things to do than mind a grafting knife.

Yesterday a storm stripped the leaves from the top third, and I thought the whole thing was finished. This morning there were new shoots pushing out between the stones, curling already before they had any leaves to shade them. I wrapped the fresh ties around the cracked lintel the way you showed me, and the youngest tendril caught the iron nail and would not let go.

Come home before the harvest. I would rather you saw it than heard me describe it badly again.
