The brig Heron cleared Lerwick in October with eleven men aboard and a stoppered jar wedged under the galley bench. Ellen Sayle had ground the contents herself, soot from her kitchen hearth worked with a spoon of seal oil, and she would not let her husband Robbie sail without it. The sea takes everything, she told him, but writing with that would keep his name legible when the rest washed away.

Off the Faroes the weather turned hard and the captain's bottle of ink went over in the swell, so the log had to be kept in whatever was left, which was Ellen's black. Robbie wrote each day's reckoning with a quill cut from a gull feather. Where a letter ran thin he went over it again, and the strokes curled and tapered the way waves do when the wind lifts off their tops. By the third week the mate, Tam Jessop, had started asking to see the page before the captain did.

On the twenty-second night the Heron lost her foremast and the lamp went out. Robbie sat in the dark with the jar in his lap and drew a small heart on the back of the log board, then a second beside it, joined by a long stroke that ran down toward the keel. When they found the page at dawn it was wet and smudged, but the two hearts had held, each with a tail curling above and below as if a current had tugged at the ink.

Robbie came home in March with the jar empty and his name still readable. Ellen took the board, looked at it for a long time, and said she had known it would hold. Then she fetched the spoon and began grinding again.
