Lion and lioness with rose on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo covers the side of the thigh and hip, showing a male lion with a full mane beside a lioness with her head turned toward him. Below them a rose sits within swirling scrollwork and leaf-like flourishes. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys and dark accents on the fur and petals.

The rains had failed three seasons running when the old lion came down from the high rocks with his mate at his shoulder, and the people of Kesh-Ammu barred their gates. Everyone knew a lion that came to water would take a goat by morning. Only the widow Tamar left her gate open, because her cistern had gone to cracked clay and she had nothing left to lose.

The pair drank at her cistern each night and left the goat pens alone. The lioness would sit at the gate with her head turned toward the lion, watching him the way Tamar watched the sky for clouds. The lion's mane was full of dust and burrs, and the widow combed it out with a bone comb while he lay still and let her. The rose bush by her wall had been dead for a year, but she kept pouring the grey water from the washing onto its roots anyway.
In the dry month the king's men came up the valley with spears and a bounty painted on a board. The lioness rose before anyone saw them and walked out through the reeds, slow and deliberate, drawing the riders up the stony track toward the north ridge. The lion stayed in the widow's yard. When the hunters came back empty-handed they said the cats had vanished into the hills as if they had never been.
That spring the dead rose by Tamar's wall put out leaves, then buds, then a single red flower the size of a child's fist. The lion lay down beside it each evening with his head on his paws, and the lioness came back over the ridge in autumn, thinner and limping, to lie down beside him. Tamar never saw them leave. The people of Kesh-Ammu still say the rose blooms only where a lion has rested.
