Tiger, flowers and skull on a thigh

Japanese · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A tiger climbs across the thigh, with its striped tail curling down the leg, surrounded by sprigs of flowers and leaves. A faint outlined skull sits higher up near the hip, partly framed by more flowers. The linework is bold and the tiger is shaded in black and grey, with the stripes and fur texture built up through layered tone. The skin is lit warmly against a pale background, and the design fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Oda had been painting the same tiger for eleven days when the palace steward arrived at the workshop with a cough and a demand. The Queen wanted the screen finished before the autumn audiences. Oda dipped her brush in ink the colour of wet slate and did not look up.

"It is finished when the tiger stops watching me," she said.

The tiger on the silk had been painted to climb, one forepaw hooked over the frame, its belly sliding past a branch of white jasmine. Oda had given it stripes like rain running down a window and a tail that fell the whole height of the screen before curling at the bottom like a question. Round its shoulders she had scattered sprigs of blossom and leaf. Higher up, half lost in the grey mist she had brushed in, a skull grinned from among the flowers, because the old masters always kept one thing in the room that would not stay put.

That night the workshop was quiet except for the drip of the lacquer vats. Oda sat up with a lamp and saw the tail twitch. It was only a flicker, the kind of thing a tired eye makes, but when she stood, the tiger's head had turned toward the skull and its jaw was open as if to speak. She stayed at the screen until the lamp guttered, painting nothing, only watching the flowers stir as though a wind had come through the room.

At dawn she finished the last stripe on the tail and set down her brush. The steward found the workshop empty, the screen bare but for a sprig of jasmine and a skull that now wore a faint smile. On the floorboards below, someone had left a trail of damp black prints, and at the end of them, curled like the tip of a tail, lay a single inked stripe that Oda had never painted.
