Lion cub silhouette on an ankle
Ankle · Colour · Photo
A lion cub in profile, shown with its head low and tail curling upwards, fills most of the frame. The design uses a cream highlight line, brown body fill and a dark, soft shaded border that gives a raised, glowing effect. The tattoo sits on the skin of a lower leg against a dark background, with the subject centred.

The cub went up on the hoarding above Pryce's bakery the spring I turned sixteen, and Dad said it was the daftest thing he had ever signed off on. A lion over a loaf of bread, he said, and nobody in Stroud would know what to make of it. Mrs Pryce had paid in advance, though, and her cheque cleared, so the lion went up anyway.

Dad taught me the order of it. The brown body went on first, flat and even, then the shadow was laid along the outside with a worn sponge so the edge softened into the board. The cream came last, a single thin line with a rigger brush, tracing the head, the bent foreleg and that long tail flicking up towards the gutter. Get the highlight right, he said, and the thing lifts off the wood like it's about to jump. Get it wrong and it's just a cat cut out of cardboard.
It weathered the way good paint does, and for years it was the only thing on the street anyone photographed. A girl with a pushchair once stopped under it and told her mother the cub looked ready to pounce on the pigeons. Her mother said pigeons were fair game. I stood in the doorway pretending to check the till.
Dad died in the winter. The following March I climbed the ladder with a tin of the same cream he always used, and I found the paw nearest the door had flaked back to bare wood. I mixed the colour twice to match it, laid the line slowly, and stepped down to look. The cub was leaning into the wind again, tail up, ready to go.
