Tribal sea turtle on a lower leg
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black sea turtle seen from above, with a head, two front flippers and a rear flipper. The shell and flippers are filled with tribal-style patterns of white negative space, while the flippers are mostly solid black. The turtle sits against plain pale skin, with a blurred pavement background and a glimpse of clothing at the edge of the frame.

Dear Tomasz, the turtle came up the slipway at Porthcurno on Tuesday, a good three hours after the tide had turned, and Mrs Ferris swears the church bell drew it in. I don't believe in bells, but I do believe in shells, and this one carried the patterns of every tide mark I have ever tried to read.

Its back was cut into designs like the carved pews in the chapel, circles inside circles, a spiral that ran out to the rim, and where the light fell through the shallows the pale lines looked like lace. Its flippers were plain black, heavy as wet slate. Ferris held the bucket while I lifted it, and neither of us spoke for a while, because it looked as though it was listening to us.
We kept it in the tank behind the lifeboat shed until the vet came over from Penzance. She ran her thumb along the spiral and said the marks were like fingerprints, that no two grown turtles carry the same ones. Then she asked whether the tide had been out long enough for it to go back. I said yes. Ferris said the bell had rung it in, and I let him have that.
This morning we carried it down to the water at six. Its front flippers pushed into the foam like oars finding the rhythm, and the spiral was gone under the first wave before I had finished my breath. Write soon. The kettle is on, and there is a crescent of wet sand across the step that I have not swept, because I rather like that it is there.
