Sister Maud kept a lamp lit at the end of Ward Six because the children would not sleep in the dark. On the windowsill sat a small painted cub, its orange gone soft at the paws, which the cleaner had found in a laundry bin and nobody had claimed.

When the boy in bed four asked why the cub hung its head, she told him what her grandmother had told her in a village where the river rose every spring. The cub had been the smallest of the lions, and the rains came so hard one year that the grass went under. The others climbed the hill to sleep, but the little one stayed on the bank, bowing its head to the water so the river would know it was not proud. The river was a patient thing. It took the cub's breath, but it did not take the cub, and when the flood went down, the older lions found it standing on a flat stone with one paw raised, calling them back.

The boy asked whether the cub was still standing there. Maud said the stone was still there, and so was the paw, because a raised paw is how you tell the water you have not gone anywhere.

She turned the lamp down to its lowest glow and sat by his bed until his breathing slowed, the way the river slows in the dry months.
