Lion face tattoo on a finger
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small lion's face is tattooed on the side of a finger, facing the viewer with its mane shown in dark, feathered strokes. The shading is soft and detailed, with fine hatching around the eyes and nose and smooth grey tones across the muzzle. The hand rests on a dark leather surface, and the background is a blurred dark fabric with a small white-and-black object at the lower right.

The ink-woman at Sluice Row says it was grown back in a seed tank under the old hospital, and that its mane came through patchy, like frost on a window. Nobody in the Reach has seen a real one since the Drowning, so the children followed the cart all the way to the market steps and tried to count its whiskers.

Ada at the stall paid for the work herself, two weeks of eel-smoking credit, and asked for the face to be done small enough to sit on the side of a finger. She wanted it watching her, she said, not the other way round. Halloran pricked it out over three evenings with a needle dipped in soot, feathering the mane in short dark strokes and leaving the muzzle the colour of old ash so it would look sleepy in lamplight.
On the last night the lamps failed across the whole district, and Ada sat by the window holding that finger up to the glow from the harbour. The lion's eyes caught the light, and she laughed, because she had never once in her life been looked at so steadily.
I will come down at the thaw. Keep my bed made.
Love, Pell
