Lion head on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large lion's head faces forward, with a detailed mane that fades softly into the skin at the edges. The fur is built from fine, directional strokes, and the eyes, nose and whiskers are shaded with strong contrast. The image is in black and grey only, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a dark garment and a black leather seat.

The lion over the east gate at Kessel Bridge had lost its nose to a shell before anyone now working the crossing was born, and its mane had gone soft with a century of river damp. Ilse Varga, who held the early shift, said it looked as if it were thinking. She touched its brow with two fingers before unlocking the booth, a habit she had never explained to the new men from the ministry.

That Tuesday a lorry came over the bridge with its tailboard lashed shut and a driver who would not meet her eye. The papers were in order. The stamp was in order. Only the dog in the cab whined when she walked round the back, and in the wind off the water she thought she heard something like a breath behind the stone.
She unlashed the tailboard herself. Under the tarpaulin sat crates of cut marble bound for a memorial in the next valley, and every crate bore the same carved mane, the same sculptor's mark as the one over her head. The driver began to talk about his daughter's school fees and then stopped talking altogether. Ilse wrote the cargo down exactly as it was, crate by crate, and stamped the sheet twice so the paper would carry the truth whatever else it did.
In April the ministry lifted the lion down for restoration. Ilse stood at the gate while the crane swung it clear, and the new nose gleamed pale against the grey stone. Beneath the empty niche, someone had scratched a small mane into the brickwork at her eye level, and she left it there, because she had never been the one to clean up after a lion.
