Realistic lion head on upper back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large lion head with a full, flowing mane fills most of the frame, seen face on with its eyes and muzzle clearly rendered. The tattoo uses soft shading and fine hair-like strokes to build depth, with warm brown tones and darker grey shadows. The subject is centred on the upper back, with the edges of the shoulders and a white strappy top visible around it.

The mane was the hard part, and Hale had left it half done when the fever took him at Funchal. You sit on the forecastle hatch with the lamp hooked to a belaying pin, the chisel held the way he showed you, short strokes following the grain of the oak so the hair seems to lift off the wood. The lion is still bolted to the bowsprit beneath the stays, and every time the bow dips the sea comes up white and gets under its chin.

Off the Horn the weather turns for three days. Nobody sleeps properly. Cook says the lion is drinking the sea, and laughs too loudly when he says it. You climb out along the bowsprit with a rope round your waist, spray stinging your eyes, and you tell the lion what Hale told you, that a mane is only a lot of small decisions. Your fingers are numb. The chisel slips once and takes a curl off the cheek. You swear, then laugh, because the cut makes the face look like it is wincing, and it is the first thing on this ship that looks as tired as you feel.
Hale's bench is in the carpenter's store now, wrapped in sailcloth with his tools laid out. You find his mark under the lion's jaw, a little wedge with a dot, and decide your own goes there too, low down where only the ropes and the gulls will ever see it.
Four months later the Constance Adair noses into the Bristol river on a grey morning. The lion comes up first out of the mist, mane combed back by the wind, and the dockers stop to stare. Someone whistles. You stand at the rail with salt drying white on your sleeves and watch them look at the carved face, not at the small mark beneath it, and you find that is exactly how you wanted it.
