Lion head with tribal swirls on the chest
Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A large lion's head with a detailed mane and intense eyes fills the centre of the chest, with the face shaded in greys and browns. Flowing tribal-style swirls wrap around the lion on both sides, with bold black areas contrasting with the lighter shading of the fur. The close crop focuses on the tattoo, with the skin tone and edges of the torso visible around it.

The sea wind has got into the marquee again, lifting the corners of the tablecloths like a dog sniffing at them, and you are the one who has to fix what has come loose. Your uncle Dessie wants the old figurehead stood by the cake, the carved lion they pulled from the Mary Ann before she was broken up, because he promised his late wife it would see the wedding. Nobody else in Mousehole will go near it after dark.

You go down to the boathouse with a torch and a bag of cable ties. The lion lies on sacking under a tarpaulin, its mane worked into long curling scrolls that the carver copied from the tide-marks on the harbour wall. Its eyes still shine where somebody has kept rubbing the varnish. You kneel beside it and hear your own breath come back off the rafters, and for a moment you think the doors have opened behind you.
Nothing has opened. It is only the bride, in borrowed wellingtons under her dress, asking whether you have found it. Together you drag it up the slipway on a sledge made from a pallet. At the marquee the groom is waiting with a bottle of Cornish cider and a face like a man trying not to laugh or cry, and he lifts one of the lion's ears as if it were a hand.
Dessie stands it at the head of the table and tells the room the Mary Ann went down in 1971 with all hands saved, which is not true, and everyone raises a glass to the lion anyway. When you finally sit down, its gaze falls on the cake, and the wind goes quiet for the first time all afternoon.
