Lion profile sketch with Leo script

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil sketch of a lion's head facing right, with a flowing mane drawn as sweeping outlines and a curled tail-like line rising behind it. The word Leo is written in looping script below the curl. The linework is light and loose, with some shading in the mane and along the lower jaw, and the drawing is entirely in graphite on pale paper.

Dear Mags, the oven in the back has started humming again, the low note it makes just before the bread is ready, and I have decided to take that as a sign that you were right about the sourdough starter and I was wrong to throw the jar out. Don't tell Dev. He has been insufferable since the Tuesday rota swap and I would rather suffer in silence.

The shop is quiet at this hour. Just me, the radio turned down to nothing, and a tray of cinnamon knots I shaped too tight because my hands were still cold from the loading bay. Mr Okafor from the flats came in at half four again, the way he does, and bought a single rye and asked after my cat without ever once asking my name. I told him the cat is called Biscuit now, which is a lie, but it made him laugh, and a laugh at half four is worth more than the rye.

There is a sketch pinned above the till that the lad from the print shop left behind last week. A lion turned to face the window, mane swept back like it has just come in out of weather, and the word Leo curling underneath in looping pencil. He said he drew it for a sister who wants it on her hip. I keep looking at it while the dough proves. The lines are so loose you could blow them away, and yet the animal in them is absolutely certain of itself. I think that is what I want from this year, Mags. Less sketch, more nerve. Anyway, the knots are cooling and the sun is starting to show grey over the car park, so I had better get them into the case before they go hard.

Love, Rosie
