Fox sketch looking over its shoulder
Black and grey · Flash
A full-body fox stands in profile, head turned back over its shoulder and a bushy tail sweeping low to the left. The linework is loose and sketched, with feathered strokes and soft pencil shading along the fur, legs and tail. The drawing is in greys only on a plain white background, with the figure filling most of the frame.

Dear Ysolde,

You will think me mad, but the fox has taken up with our survey party. It appeared on the third morning below the Greywater ford, sat on the bank like a magistrate, and when Master Corran shouted at it, it only turned its head and looked back over its shoulder, as if it expected us to follow. We have followed it every day since. It never hurries. It keeps to the reed-line where the ground will bear a horse, and twice it has stopped where the mud would have swallowed the mules.
Corran says it is a trick of the light and he means to finish the Crown's map regardless. I have dropped the sounding rope wherever the fox sat down, and each time the line came up solid. Yesterday it led us across the flats to a stone causeway no survey had ever recorded, half sunk, with the old Varre arch still standing at the far end under green moss.
We crossed at dusk. The fox waited on the far side, tail curled low across its forepaws, and looked back once more before it slipped into the alders. Corran wrote Impassable in the ledger and then, after a long while, drew a line through it.
I am sending this with the courier so you know where I am. If I do not write again, look for the causeway. Tell Father the fox was right about the water.
Your loving brother, Tobin
