Lips and music staff on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo on the shoulder and upper back. Red lips on the left blend into a shaded grey music staff that carries a large treble clef, black notes and a few sharp-style marks. The realistic shading gives the staff a curved, three-dimensional look, while the lips are the only area of colour.

The choir on Meridian Deck was ordered to stop singing the year the water recyclers failed, so we learned to sing with our hands and our mouths shut. Ysolde taught me the staff first, five lines chalked across the bulkhead, and a treble clef she painted like a question mark that had wandered off from its answer.

Nobody aboard had seen a real instrument since the Calder cargo was jettisoned. What we had were stories and the notes themselves, which the old crew had carved into the hull plates so the children could trace them with their fingers. The sharps were the hard ones. Ysolde said a sharp was a note pushed up by someone who refused to be ordinary, and that the council had dimmed the lights of anything that refused.
The night the lamps went amber, I took a brush and a pot of red dye boiled from beet skins down to the hydroponic bay. I painted a mouth onto the plating where the staff began, full and open, the way Ysolde's had been on the last public hymn before the speaker grilles were sealed. The dye ran at the corners. The mouth looked as if it were about to say a word it had been holding for a long time.
At dawn the watch found me asleep against the plates and did not scrub it away. A girl of about six asked what the mouth was singing. I told her the truth, that it was singing the notes we had been too frightened to say aloud, and that if she stood very still with her palm on the cold steel she would feel the first one arrive.
