Rose wand with star on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A green wand with a gold star at its tip, marked with a green circle containing the number 4, is surrounded by black radiating lines and small sparkles. Pink roses, a rosebud, a small heart and green leaves sit along the shaft. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills give a classic traditional look, set against a plain reddish background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp had gone dark at ten past three, and Nell Harrow was on the gallery with the brass rod in both hands before she had properly woken. The rod was her father's, a green-painted signal staff with a gilt star bolted to its tip, and the star's face was scratched with a 4 because Carrick Skerry was the fourth light on the coast and he had never trusted anyone to remember that otherwise. Rain came sideways off the Atlantic, and the fog lay on the water like wet wool.

She hooked one boot against the iron rail and began to wave the star in slow arcs, the way he had taught her: one long sweep, two short, the old count for a keeper in trouble. Below, the sea broke white against the rocks. Somewhere to the south the fourth light would be watching for her, and the boats coming home from the Tullan grounds would be steering by whatever they could find.

Behind her, the roses her mother had planted against the store wall were thrashing at the glass, their pink heads bowed with water. Nell had cut a rosebud for the lamp room table every morning for a year after the funeral, and the little red heart her brother had carved into the doorframe still showed through the paint. She did not think about any of that. She thought about the count. One long. Two short. Until the fog thinned to a grey ribbon and an answering flash blinked back from the south.

At first light the mechanism coughed, caught, and the great lens threw its beam out over the water. Nell laid the rod on the gallery boards, ran her thumb over the scratched 4, and went down to put the kettle on.
