The parcel came up on the coal lorry, and Mrs Holt swore the post office had sat on it a week. Inside was your tin of rouge and the two lipsticks you said were the last of the shade at Bon Marché, the ones in leopard print cases that make the lads at the pit gate whistle. I wore the red one to chapel on Sunday. Dad pretended not to look, which means he looked twice.

You'll laugh, but the colour reminds me of the lamps in the cage when the shift runs late, bright against all that grey. Dad says a girl in the city doesn't need paint to be seen. I told him the coal doesn't care what I look like, so I may as well please myself with something small.
