The keeper's girl was nine the winter she first heard the sea answer. Her father said it was only the tide working the gullies under the lamp house, and he said it without lifting his head from the brass he was polishing, which was how she knew he had heard it too and did not want to.

Her mother had left on the mail boat in October with a tin trunk and a promise to write from Glasgow. Letters came every second Thursday, then every month, then not at all. Mrs Cairns from the cottages said the sea took people who listened to it too hard, so the girl stopped sitting on the wall at dusk and began sitting in the lamp room instead, with her ear against the cold iron of the stairs.

On the night of the great fog the ocean said something different. It was not the long hush against the shingle. It was a rhythm, three short and one long, and she knew it the way you know your own name called from another room. She dragged the paraffin cans to the gallery rail and lit them one by one while her father was still hunting for his boots, and out past the Skerry a boat that had been turning in circles came slowly onto the line of light.

In the morning he did not scold her. He sat at the table with his cup going cold and said, very quietly, that her mother used to hum the same three and one whenever she was waiting for the kettle to boil. The girl looked out at the water, grey and ordinary, and said that the sea had only borrowed it. He laughed then, properly, for the first time since October, and the sound carried down the stairs and out across the water the way things carry on a still morning.
