Every morning before the first train to Carrick Bridge, Mabel Tenby walked the length of platform two with a tin of white paint and a brush no wider than a pencil. The year the line was cut back to a single track, a boy called Owen Pryce arrived with a suitcase tied shut with string and a ticket for a town he had never seen. He sat on the bench under the clock and let three trains go without him. On the fourth morning Mabel sat down beside him, said nothing for as long as it took the kettle in the waiting room to boil, then painted words along the back of the bench in careful joined letters: you got this, with a full stop pressed hard after so it would hold.

He did not understand it, but he picked up the suitcase. The next morning the words were still there, scuffed where the boots had been, so he stayed one more day, and then another, until he had work painting signal posts and a room above the tea shop. Each morning Mabel went along the platform touching up the letters, and each morning someone new stopped to read them and went on a little lighter.

When Mabel died, the tin was found in her coat pocket, the lid rusted on, and the brush still wet. Owen went down to platform two on the first cold morning after and found the full stop had worn away under the feet of commuters. He knelt on the concrete and finished it himself, slowly, the way she had taught him.
