Literary quote in typewriter lettering
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A block of black typewriter-style text reads a quotation about stepping out into the night, ending with a citation reference, set in several lines across the skin. The lettering is crisp, solid black with clean edges and even spacing, and the letters are sized to read clearly. The image is shot close up in soft light, with the skin tone and a patterned fabric edge visible at the bottom of the frame.

The typewriter on the reception desk at the Hollin Crag inn had three keys that stuck, the e, the r and the apostrophe, and Mrs Pargeter swore they were a sign of character. The snow had come over the pass on Tuesday, and by Thursday the road was only a rumour under white. Our single guest was a cartographer named Edwin Thwaite, who typed his survey notes every evening with two fingers while his cigarette burned down to nothing in the ashtray.

On the third night the wind dropped and the stars came out hard and close. Edwin pushed back his chair, pulled on his boots and said he meant to walk up to the cairn before the moon set. I told him he would be buried by morning. He only laughed, took the carbon copy from the platen and slid it under my plate of cold mutton. It held a few lines about the light on the ridge, and a last line he had struck through twice, then typed again in capitals.
I did not go after him. I sat with that carbon until the kettle boiled dry, reading words that were never meant for me, my heart knocking against my ribs. In the morning his tracks climbed the slope and stopped at the cairn, where his boots stood side by side on the stones, laces tucked in, and nothing else at all.
Mrs Pargeter says he was a fool who found exactly the adventure he deserved. I keep the carbon folded in the typewriter case. Every winter I feed a clean sheet into the platen before bed, type one line, and leave the back door unlatched.
