Sit down on the coping, the lock won't fill for another quarter hour. Now. There was a boy who lived on a planet no bigger than our wheelhouse, and every morning he swept the dust off it with a broom made of heron feathers, because a boy like that cannot abide dirt on his own front step.

One evening, when the sun had crept round the rim of his world in a long spiral, a fox came out of the reeds, grey as river mud, and lay down in the shade of his one red rose. The boy asked the fox to play. The fox said it could not play, for it had not been tamed. Tamed, said the boy, what's that? And the fox told him it meant making something ordinary into something you would miss if it were gone.

So the boy sat with the fox every evening at the same hour, and the fox watched the sun slide down while the boy learned that an hour is only an hour until you wait for it. When the time came for him to leave, he gave the fox nothing but a promise: whenever the sun came round in its spiral, he would look up and know exactly which hour it was. So when you see the sun over the lock of a morning, that's his hour, and that's the fox keeping its word. Now mind the rope, and go on home before your mothers come looking.
