Black and grey script words Live, Laugh and Love scattered with outline stars along the side ribs, in a fine line lettering style.

Live, laugh, love script with stars on ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo reads Live, Laugh and Love in flowing script, running down the side of the torso with the words stacked in a vertical line. Small outlined and filled stars surround the lettering, with the shading kept light and mostly grey. The ink is black and grey, and the composition is a close side view of the ribs against a plain grey top and pink waistband.

Dear Ivy,

I'm writing this on the back of a replacement timetable because the buffet has run out of paper cups and I have nowhere else to put my hands. The 6:12 to Brackenly has been cancelled again, so the platform is full of people pretending they chose to stand here. Your father would have laughed at that. He always said Hollowmere was the only station in the county where the trains argued with the signal box.

Last night I found the tin you sent me in the spring, the one with the enamel stars on the lid. Inside was the scrap of paper you wrote on before you left for Leeds, the three words stacked one above the other like stops on a line: Live, Laugh, Love. I'd forgotten you copied them from the sign above the tea urn. You said it was the only sensible advice anyone had ever painted in a station.

So I did what you would have done. I walked the length of the platform reading every notice aloud, and by the end a boy with a rucksack was reading them with me, calling out the platform numbers like the names of saints. Nobody stopped us. The stars pressed into the cold glass of the waiting room caught the sodium light, and I thought of you at nine, counting them on the bus home with your nose against the window.

The train has finally come, and the doors are sighing open. I don't know where it goes, but I'm getting on. Come and find me at the end of the line, and bring the tin.

Love, Mum
