Script love tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of the word love written in a flowing, looping script across the skin. The linework is fine and even, with a dark outline and light centres to the strokes, and a long swash runs beneath the letters. The ink is black and the image is cropped tightly on the tattoo against a soft, plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Marigold Ann was due in on the evening tide, and Ada Fenn had until dusk to finish her stern board. Her father's hand had started to tremble the winter before, so the lettering was hers now: gilt on black, the name in upright capitals as the owners had ordered. Captain Hale came down the quay with a folded paper and asked for one more word, small, beneath the name.

'Write love,' he said. 'Not in capitals. Run it like a line of rope, with a tail that goes under.' Ada asked whom it was for. He looked at the water for a long while before answering that it was for a woman in Gdansk who had once sent him a letter he never answered, and that the ship would carry it there whether or not he did.

She mixed the black size and worked it with a quill, thin strokes first, then the loop of the L, the swelling o, the v that dipped like a gull. The hardest part was the long swash that ran under all four letters and back again, because one hitch would spoil the whole line. She did it in a single breath, the way her father had taught her, and when she blew on it the gold dust lifted and settled again.

Hale read it standing up, folded the paper into his coat, and said nothing. The Marigold Ann sailed at first light with the word on her stern, facing the wake, where only the gulls and the sea could read it.
