Longhorn skull on lower back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small longhorn skull with curved horns sits on the lower back of a person wearing white lace underwear. The outlines are dark and even, with grey shading on the horns and bone, and a simple ornament on the forehead of the skull. The tattoo is centred in the frame against plain, lightly freckled skin.

No, don't light the lamp yet, the bullock's still on the causeway, and I'll not have him walk into the surf for want of a bit of light. Sit down. You'll hear it all or none of it.

That was the spring the Harlow brothers sold their longhorns off the mainland and kept one back, a big brindle steer with horns like two sickles laid end to end. They put him on the salt flats below the lighthouse because the grass there was sweet, and because nobody fancied a steer that size wandering the road. Old Mrs Pell, who kept the light before me, swore he could smell a storm three days early. She'd stand at the gate with a bucket of molasses and talk to him like a parson.

When the squall came in off the Gulf, the steer was gone. The fence lay flat as a biscuit. We found him at the foot of the tower in the morning, stood square in the doorway as if he was waiting for the stairs to be swept. Pell had carved a sun and a crescent into the gatepost that season, and the steer had rubbed his great skull against it until the mark stayed. Some say the horns were the moon and the forehead the sun, and that the two of them kept the tide honest between them.

He lived another eleven years. When he died we laid him out on the dune, the gulls picked him to bone, and the wind kept the skull clean. I took it up myself and set it on the sill of the lamp room, where the beam goes round and lights it white every few seconds. Go on, lean in. Look at the forehead. That's the ornament. Pell said it was the only thing on this island that never needed a keeper.
