Ram skull on the outer thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A ram skull with long, curled horns is the central subject, shown front-on and slightly tilted. The skull and horns are built from fine stippled dots and short hatching, giving soft, textured shading with a clear outline. The design is in black ink and grey tones only and sits centrally on the outer thigh, with denim shorts and black socks visible around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the sheepfold wall by the second night, and my mother said the pass wouldn't open before the thaw, so we set the long table for whoever was still stranded at the Crook and Lantern. Only the carrier from Hebden was left, and Mr Ashby, who had paid in silver and asked for the room under the eaves. He never once looked at the ram's skull above the hearth.

That skull had been Grandfather's. He found it on the tops in a year when the flock went under the drifts, and he hung it there with its horns curled out like a pair of hands cupped round a candle. Every winter my mother dusted the stippled bone with a feather, and every winter she told me not to count the dots, because counting them made you lose your place. I tried once. I got to four hundred and eleven before the kettle boiled over.

On the third night Mr Ashby came down at midnight, the candle shaking in his fist. He said the ram had been bleating in the chimney. I told him the wind does that. He said it was calling for its other half, and that the carrier had told him an old shepherd sold the skull off the tops for a debt he never settled. Then he took the feather from the mantel and, very carefully, began to count.

By morning the snow had stopped and the lane was ploughed. Mr Ashby was gone, his bed made tight as a drum, and the skull's horns had turned a shade further toward the door. My mother didn't remark on it. She just handed me the feather and told me to mind my place.
