Los Angeles street signs and palm trees sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the upper arm and forearm with a large scene of street signs reading Rodeo Dr, Sunset Blvd, Broadway and One Way, set among tall palm trees and city buildings. The shading is soft and detailed, with smooth gradients on the trees, buildings and sky, and crisp outlines on the signs. The design is entirely in black and grey ink and fills the arm in a continuous flowing composition.

Pull up your chair, you've been staring at that road since Barstow and it'll keep. I'll tell you about Ruben Oaks, who drove a sign van for the city of Los Angeles for thirty-one years and never once read a street sign he hadn't put up himself. That was his joke. He said you could tell a man's whole life by which corners he bothered to fix.

One August, a heat so thick the tar went soft on Sunset, he got a call about a stretch of Rodeo Drive where a sign had blown down in the night and lay face up in the gutter like a dropped hymn book. Nobody would touch it until the council had a quote. So Ruben knelt on the hot kerb with a rag and a tin of enamel, reading the letters backwards to himself while he scrubbed. A woman in a grey vest stopped to watch him. She said the palms along that street were the only honest thing left in the city, because they never pretended to be anything but tall and thirsty.
He didn't answer her. He bolted the sign back on its pole, then drove out past the palms toward the desert, where the highway runs so straight you can watch your own dust settle a mile behind you. He never came back for his wages.
Some nights, out past the Mojave, you can still see a lone van with its headlights on, going nowhere in particular, its roof rack hung with street signs, every one of them pointing back the way you came.
