Winged heart mandala design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a heart with stylised wings, set within concentric circles and a geometric mandala pattern. A decorative band runs across the top and a row of chains with dangling beads and drops hangs from the lower edge. The linework is thin and even, and the image uses black ink on white with no shading or colour.

Late August had turned the Ashcombe orchard the colour of old brass, and Ruth Pellow had been drawing the same circle for three days because it kept closing wrong. She sat on an upturned crate under the bullace tree with a fine nib and a steel rule borrowed from the estate office, trusting the rule more than her own hand. The heart always came first. Then the wings, which her grandmother had called the hinge, because they let a shape open without falling apart.

Her cousin Dev came up between the rows with a flask of cider and a letter from the solicitor. He read it standing, squinting into the low sun, and said the orchard would be sold at Michaelmas unless someone could show the old grafting rights on paper. Ruth tilted the drawing toward him. The rings were rootstocks, she said, each one a different graft. The beads that hung from the bottom edge were the windfalls nobody had ever counted. "Then count them," Dev said, "starting with that row."
They walked it together, Ruth reading the bark for the faint seam where a scion had taken. Forty-one trees, forty-one small marks in ink along the margin of the drawing. By dusk the chain of drops had become a ledger, and the solicitor's letter sat folded in her pocket, no longer needed.
Dev asked what the heart was for. She said it was the seam itself, the place where two different trees agreed to become one, and the paper was only the record of it. A breath of wind moved through the lowest branch and shook loose a single green apple, which rolled across the grass and stopped at the foot of her crate, a few inches from her boot.
