Lotus and heart ornament on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a lotus-style mandala sits at the top of the forearm, with dangling ornamental motifs and a heart-shaped pendant at the bottom. The design uses stippled dotwork shading alongside fine outline linework. The forearm is photographed against a dark maroon wall, with a patterned sleeve visible at the right edge.

Hold the ladder steady, girl, and mind the second rung, it's been loose since your uncle stood on it. That was the August the bottom orchard came into fruit all at once, and nobody had the sense to pick it. Tomas Vane had planted those trees in a ring around one old quince, and the quince was the only thing he ever talked to.

The fruit hung heavy that year, each quince dangling from its own thread of stalk like a bead on a rosary. Pickers came up the lane with baskets and opinions. They said the tree had rot in its heart. Tomas said nothing. Each morning he climbed with his knife, cut one quince free, and carried it down to the river, where he dropped it in and watched it turn over and go under.
By September only one was left, the lowest, shaped like a heart pressed flat between two books. The pickers gave up and went home to their own apples. Tomas climbed for it at dusk, and when he came down his hands were empty. He sat on the wall with his boots in the nettles and told the river the quince had asked to stay where it was.
The next morning it was still there, swinging gently over the water, and a wasp was walking along its stalk as if it owned the place. Tomas took his tea out to the wall and didn't climb a single step. Pass me that cup, love, and put the kettle on again.
