Black and grey shaded lotus flower with a curving stem on the side of a torso, above the waistband of a dark garment.

Shaded lotus flower on the side ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded lotus flower with layered petals and a small dotted centre sits on the side of the torso, with a long, tapering stem curling down and to the left. The petals use soft grey gradients for depth, while the stem is a solid dark line that thins at its ends. The tattoo is framed by a pale pink top above and a dark waistband below, with a navel piercing visible on the left.

The seed head rode to Grimsby in my oilskin pocket, wrapped in a wet sock so the salt would not get at it. Skipper Pyle called it a daft thing to bring on a trawler, and he was right, but the Constance Mary had been out nine days by then and nobody aboard had seen a flower since Hull.

I kept it in a bucket by the fish room hatch, topping the water up from the tap each morning while the others hauled and gutted. The stem grew long and thin, bending over the rim as if it were looking for something it had dropped over the side. Tommy Cole swore it was counting the catch. I told him it was only thirsty, which was true, and that it was going to open for us, which I did not know.

In February we lost a warp off the Dogger and the deck went to chaos, and a wave swept the bucket across the boards. When I got down on my knees to find the pod, the stem had snapped clean and curled itself round my finger like a hook. I took it home to my mum's back garden, dug a hole beside the washing line, and filled it with rainwater. In July, the morning the Constance Mary came back up the Humber, the first petal broke the surface, pale as a gull's underside, and I stood there with the kettle going cold behind me.
